What is S.A.P.?

Dear Families,

At my recent Parent Advisory Council, it was suggested that I take a moment to share information about an important resource available to our students—the Pennsylvania Student Assistance Program (SAP). SAP is a team-based, systematic process designed to mobilize school resources and remove barriers to learning. Its primary goal is to help students overcome challenges such as issues related to alcohol, drugs, mental health, or other factors that may impact their success in school.

Our SAP team is here to support students and families, but it’s important to understand that SAP does not diagnose or treat students. Instead, our team will work closely with you to provide information, connect you with resources, and empower you to make the decisions that best meet your family’s needs. This systematic, tiered approach allows us to offer a range of supports both within the school and through community services, should those be necessary. This is the first step in getting your child access to the various resources and supports we have available.

If you have concerns about your child, we encourage you to reach out to your school counselor first. Our counselors are trained to provide the guidance and support your child may need, and they are an essential part of our tiered system of care. By contacting your school counselor, we can ensure that we are following a comprehensive and coordinated process to best support your child.

  • Middle School:  Mrs. Reese
  • Elementary School:  Mrs. Minahan

If you see your child displaying concerning behaviors—such as withdrawing from family, experiencing unexplained sadness, struggling with defiance, or experimenting with substances—it may be time to make a SAP referral. Our counselors and SAP team will work with you every step of the way, ensuring your child receives the best possible care and support. Click here to see the SAP teams for each school.

Should your child be referred to SAP, we will first seek your written permission before moving forward. Participation is voluntary, and our team will develop a plan in collaboration with you, focused on your child’s success in school. I strongly encourage you to reach out to your child’s counselor to schedule a meeting to discuss how we can work together to help your child(ren).

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s school counselor. Also, click here to visit our website to learn more about SAP.  Together, we can ensure your child has the support they need to thrive.

Thank you for your partnership and for trusting us to support your child's well-being.
