Dear Windber Families,
I want to provide you with an update regarding this morning’s "Hold and Secure" at Windber Area High School and Middle School to keep everyone informed about today’s events.
Earlier today, the schools initiated a "Hold and Secure" after a student became ill in the hallway, allowing our maintenance staff the necessary time to clean the area without interruption. While this was taking place, we received a report through the Safe to Say program from a student who was concerned about a comment made by a peer regarding having a weapon in school.
The administration, along with our School Resource Officer (SRO), immediately investigated the report while maintaining the "Hold and Secure." After speaking with the students involved, it was determined that the comment was an immature act with no credible threat. At no time were our students or staff in any danger, and we took swift action to ensure everyone’s safety. The code of conduct will be enforced.
Once the investigation was complete and the situation was confirmed to be non-threatening, an "All Clear" message was given, and the school day resumed as normal. Please know that we needed time to complete our investigation before communicating with our families. I hope you can understand the need for the delayed response. The last thing I want to do is spread incorrect or misleading information to heighten emotions.
We are grateful to the student who submitted the tip, as it is always important to prioritize safety and report any concerning behavior. The Safe to Say program plays a critical role in ensuring a safe school environment, and we encourage all students to continue using it responsibly.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school office.
Sincerely,
Mr. Michael J. Vuckovich
Superintendent of Schools
