Dear Families,
I would like to remind you about an important policy change at our high school regarding cell phone use during instructional time. Similar to last year, students will not be allowed to use their cell phones in class during instructional periods. This decision has been made with your child’s academic success and well-being in mind, and we are asking for your support in helping us implement this policy effectively.
Why This Change?
In recent years, we have seen a significant rise in anxiety and depression among students, much of which can be attributed to the constant presence of social media and the distractions it brings. By limiting cell phone use during class, we aim to help students focus more on their academics, fully engage with their learning, and reduce the stress that often comes from being tethered to their devices.
Policy Details
- No Phones During Class: Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones during instructional time. Phones should be turned off and it is highly recommended students put them in the designated phone holders.
- Permitted Use During Breaks: Students may use their phones during lunch and in between classes.
First Offense- The teacher takes the phone. The phone gets turned into the office and it can be picked up at the end of the day.
Second Offense- The teacher will take the phone. The phone gets turned into the office. The teacher calls the parents to inform them of the second infraction. The teacher will let the parent know that a third infraction will result in the need for the parent to pick up the phone from the office. Students will pick up the phone at the end of the day.
Third Offense- The teacher takes the phone. The phone gets turned into the office. The teacher calls the parents to inform them of the third infraction. The parent will pick up the phone at the end of the day.
Any offense thereafter will result in progressive disciplinary action as per the code of conduct beginning with after-school detention.
**Refusal to turn over the phone to staff- Immediate call to the office or SRO who will come to get the student and the phone followed by immediate suspension.
**Any student found using a SmartWatch as a communication device or earbuds without permission will be held to the same policy as outlined with cell phone usage
We Need Your Support
We understand that some families may not agree with this decision, and we respect your concerns. We encourage you to reach out to the school and meet with the administration if you have any questions or wish to discuss this policy further.
We strongly believe that this change will help your child focus more on their education and reduce the negative impacts associated with constant cell phone use. However, we cannot do this alone; your support at home is crucial. Please talk with your child about the importance of focusing on schoolwork during class and the benefits of limiting their screen time.
Together, we can create a more focused, positive, and supportive learning environment for all our students. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to prioritize the well-being and academic success of our students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kimberly Moore
