Dear Families,
We want to address a concerning trend revealed by the 2023 Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) results regarding food insecurity among students in Somerset County. From 2021 to 2023, the percentage of students worrying about running out of food at least once in the past year increased from 8.9% to 23.3%. Additionally, the number of students who skipped a meal due to family finances rose from 5.1% to 12.8%. While these survey questions were reworded between 2021 and 2023, the significant increases in these numbers are alarming.
We understand that the rising cost of food may be contributing to these challenges. To support our students and their families, we have compiled a list of resources available in our county. These resources can help families navigate the increasing expenses and ensure that our students have access to the food they need to thrive.
We encourage you to review and utilize these resources, which are attached to this message. Additionally, we have included information about summer meal sites in Somerset County.
Please share these resources with other families through your school's management platform, social media pages, or any other communication channels you use. The more families that are aware of these resources, the more we can support our students' success.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
